John Mann Citizenship’s Summer School is a project run for Year 11 leavers which supports young people to develop their leadership skills, consider career opportunities in some of the most prestigious workplaces in the country and practice active citizenship.
This year on 1st – 4th July 2019 Outwood Academy Portland took 7 students to join a select group from schools from across the Bassetlaw area.
It was a busy week packed with fantastic opportunities including visiting the Houses of Parliament to participate in a mock Select Committee about HS2, meeting the Speaker of the House, a tour of the House of Commons and House of Lords. Other activities included a visit to Facebook HQ, developing CVs and interview skills at Barclay’s Bank and learning about the legal profession at one of the UKs top law firms. A particular highlight of the week was a competition at Pentland Group PLC where teams of students pitched their own design of Kicker’s trainers to a panel of judges who manage the Kicker’s brand at Pentland. There was the also the opportunity for a pupil from each school to visit the ITV Television Centre and the set of Good Morning Britain. The pupils got to see first-hand the fast pace and level of work required to make the show happen.
Students had a fantastic time and extend their thanks to John Mann, Outwood Grange Academies Trust and the sponsors who allow the visit to happen and access such life-changing opportunities.
The students who went on the trip are:
Malachi C, Jonathan C, Macenzie C, Lili-Mei D, Jessica E, Ethan H and Eve S.
