Learning Environment

Outwood Academy Portland was established in June 2012 when Portland School became part of the Outwood Grange Academy Trust. The academy was built in 2008 to accommodate 1500 students and has many modern facilities which are continually being reviewed and updated.

All classrooms have projectors and interactive whiteboards and teachers have access to up to date IT equipment to ensure that teaching is able to include the latest technology. In 2013 we equipped our IT suites with new computers and now have seven fully dedicated IT suites. We have a fully stocked library which is available to students for study or leisure.

There are a wide variety of Design & Technology classes provided including Engineering, Design, Textiles as well as vocational subjects such as Hair & Beauty and Motor Vehicle studies which provide students with “hands on” experiences.

We have fully equipped science labs which give students the opportunity to try out experiments in the classroom environment and a 3D projector is available to enhance their experiences.

In PE students have the choice of a wide variety of sports. The academy participate in many local competitions such as rugby, hockey, football, futsal and athletics. Other sports are taught in school and include trampolining, badminton, basketball and volleyball. We have a sports hall and gym for indoor use and outside there are substantial playing fields, tennis courts and an all-weather, floodlit pitch.

Enrichment classes are available every day after school for students to get involved in hobbies and interests or to boost their learning. We offer over 90 different activities and these cater for all tastes. Students have their own dedicated information desk which is used to support them on a daily basis.

We are always striving to improve the facilities for learning at Outwood Academy Portland and currently have several projects which we are working on and these involve the Student Voice members who represent the students.
